Simonsig
Simonsig – Stellenbosch, South Africa
Overview
Simonsig is one of Stellenbosch’s historic estates, founded in the 1950s by Frans Malan, whose family continues to run the winery today across multiple generations. The estate played a pivotal role in South African wine history, producing the country’s first traditional-method sparkling wine (“Kaapse Vonkel”) in 1971 and helping establish the Stellenbosch Wine Route.
Located on the foothills of the Simonsberg, the vineyards benefit from decomposed granite soils and a Mediterranean climate moderated by ocean influences. Today the estate is led by Johan Malan (winemaker and owner) alongside the second and third generations, maintaining a broad portfolio from Cap Classique to Bordeaux blends. Farming is focused on site expression and long-term sustainability, with a house style combining purity of fruit, structural precision and classic Stellenbosch character.
